Plot
Children’s book author Jessica, married to musician Max, who has two daughters, Alice and Taylor, from a previous marriage, is haunted by nightmares involving her mentally ill father, Ben, and a character from her books, Simon the Spider. When the family moves into Jessica’s childhood home, Alice finds an old teddy bear named Chauncey and forms a bond with it. An elderly neighbor, Gloria, who babysat Jessica as a child, shares memories Jessica can’t recall.
After Max leaves for a tour, Chauncey starts disturbing Jessica. Taylor’s friend, Liam, experiences Chauncey’s malevolent side when it briefly transforms into a monstrous bear. Jessica prevents Alice from hurting herself and consults child psychologist, Dr. Soto, discovering that only she and Alice can see Chauncey. Footage of a past patient reveals a connection to the phrase “Never Ever,” used by Alice.
Taylor learns from Gloria that Chauncey is also Jessica’s imaginary friend, which could turn sinister if abandoned. Jessica finds drawings of Chauncey and the Never Ever. Together, Jessica, Taylor, and Gloria complete a scavenger hunt set by Chauncey, leading to a glowing door to the Never Ever realm.
