Plot

The film begins with Paul scavenging for supplies in a storehouse and escaping through deserted back alleys amid the chaos of an apocalyptic event, with sirens blaring and distant explosions and screams filling the air. He finds a secluded spot to hide, cradling his two infant sons and reassuring them that everything will be okay.

Fifteen years later, a pandemic has decimated the population and led to the collapse of civilization. Paul and his twin sons, Joseph and Thomas, live in a dilapidated farmhouse, eking out a meager existence. They board up the windows and doors and never venture outside at night due to monstrous, photophobic creatures that roam the countryside until dawn. One evening.

Thomas returns home after sunset from a nearby farm owned by the Rose family, revealing his risk-taking nature compared to his more intellectual brother Joseph, who often discusses improving their survival situation. After dinner, they hear loud banging from the cellar, indicating the creatures’ attempts to enter the house.

The following morning, Paul discovers deep gouges on the cellar door and decides to reinforce it. Joseph reveals he has been working on an off-road utility buggy in the barn, and Paul helps him get the motor running. Paul then teaches Joseph how to drive it and sends both sons to salvage wood for reinforcing the cellar door.
