Sorgavaasal is a 2024 Tamil language prison drama film directed by Siddharth Vishwanath as his debut film. The film is produced by Swipe Right Studios in association with Think Studios. The story revolves around a man who is wrongly convicted and imprisoned, and questions whether institutions like prisons can actually reform people. The film released in theaters on 29 November 2024.
Story
After a riot in Madras Central Jail, Tamil Nadu minister Mayilvaganam forms an inquiry commission, headed by retired Justice Ismail. The investigation reveals the influence of gangster Sigamani ‘Siga’, who controls the city and the prison even while in prison. Siga repents of his sins and converts to Christianity, but faces prison superintendent Sunil Kumar and rival gangs.
Parthiban ‘Parthi‘, a new inmate framed on a false murder charge. Becomes embroiled in prison politics while trying to prove his innocence. Sunil instigates Parthi to poison Siga, but Siga dies while being transported to another prison, sparking a prison riot. Siga’s partner Mani takes control of the prison and demands reforms, while corruption is exposed.
Parthi fights accusations and betrayal, leading to several deaths during the riot, including Sunil’s. The truth of Siga’s death is buried along with Sunil. Parthi and jailor Kattabomman hide their involvement, leaving the doubts alive. The film ends with Parthi’s new life starting and Kattabomman’s promotion, while Ismail questions justice and corruption.
