Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani Review: A Complete Waste of Time

Amar Prem Ki Amar Kahani, Review

Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani is a movie that would have been much better had it never been made. This movie is streaming on JioCinema, but after watching it you will feel like refunding your ticket even though it is free. And the 1 hour 57 minutes you will spend watching this movie, you will ask for that time back too.

What is the story?

The story revolves around Amar (Sunny Singh) and Prem (Aditya Seal). Amar, who is still confused about his sexuality, goes to London and meets Prem, and then both fall in love within 15 days. Amar goes to London to escape from his conservative family in Punjab and feels a sense of freedom, but after returning to India, the story turns into a typical family drama.

There is no serious conflict or depth in the story. Two people meet each other and fall in love without any major struggle or emotional journey. The problem shown in the story is of their culture – Amar is Punjabi and Prem is Bengali, and their families have more problem with this cultural difference than their sexuality.

Paradise 2024: Release Ott Platform, Review, and Movie Plot

Performances

Sunny Singh has done Amar’s role well, trying to show. The vulnerability of a man who is trying to understand his sexuality. Aditya Seal’s Prem is a confident and supportive character, but the chemistry that should have been there between the two is missing. Their love doesn’t have the spark that makes a romantic story engaging.

The supporting cast too doesn’t do anything special. The few funny scenes that are there are too over-the-top and don’t give a chance to feel emotions.

Direction

Hardik Gajjar writes and directs this story, but he seems unsure of the direction the movie should take. The film initially focuses on Amar’s struggle with his sexuality, but soon the story shifts towards cultural stereotypes and family drama. Eventually, it feels like watching a loud and exaggerated version of Two States.

The film is visually good, the contrast between the setting of London and India is shown well, which represents the internal conflict within Amar. Hanoz V Kerawala’s cinematography is bright and colorful, but the music by Prasad S sometimes disrupts the narrative flow. Which reduces the emotional impact of the story.

My Recommendation

  • If you sincerely need to look at a terrific queer love story, then it’d be higher to look at films like Badhaai Do or Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan.
  • The tale in this movie is weak, the performances also are ok, and average it is able to deliver the feeling of a waste of time.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Lead actors: Sunny Singh and Aditya Seal have done a decent job.
  • Good visuals: The contrast of London and India is captured well.
  • Light-hearted tone: Family drama and comedy with light entertainment.

Cons

  • Weak storyline: Story develops quickly, no real conflict.
  • Lack of chemistry: Chemistry is missing between lead actors.
  • Cultural stereotypes: Punjabi-Bengali cultural clash dominates too much.
  • Blurred intimacy: LGBTQ+ representation is not explored well.
  • Average music: Music does not give strong support to the narrative.

Final Verdict

Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani misses the mark. The film’s primary goal of portraying a heartfelt queer love story gets overshadowed by cultural clashes and noisy family drama. While Sunny and Aditya deliver decent performances, the story lacks emotional depth. If you’re hoping for meaningful commentary on LGBTQ+ acceptance, this film will leave you disappointed.
