Plot
In the village of Pallikondapattu, Tiruvannamalai, Kalyanam emerges as a unique and compelling figure within the Ramachandran Nadaga Sabha, a traditional Therukoothu troupe led by the inebriated and authoritative Thandavam. Originally founded by Kalyanam’s father, Elavarasan, the troupe has seen better days, but Kalyanam’s passion for the art form remains undiminished. Unlike the other 15 male members of the troupe, Kalyanam exclusively portrays female characters, a role that subjects him to ridicule and alienation from his peers and the village at large. Despite societal pressure and his mother’s concerns over his effeminate behavior and lack of marriage prospects, Kalyanam’s true ambition is to reclaim his father’s legacy by leading the drama troupe himself.
his treatment, combined with the troupe members’ mercenary attitudes, leaves Kalyanam isolated, yet determined. His relationship with Thandavam’s daughter, Jega, is a poignant subplot that underscores his internal conflict. Although Jega loves him, Kalyanam’s sense of duty and his fear of public scorn prevent him from reciprocating her feelings, leading to a heart-wrenching rejection that drives her away.
Kalyanam’s dedication to the art form and his father’s memory becomes his driving force, even as he faces betrayal and loss. The turning point comes during the Mottaparai village festival, where Kalyanam, channeling his father’s spirit, performs the role of Kunthi with such profound emotion that it captivates the audience and earns him the respect of the very people who had once scorned him.
Thandavam, struck by guilt and remorse, seeks Kalyanam’s forgiveness before dying, leaving the troupe without a leader. In the aftermath, Kalyanam finally steps into the male role of Arjunan, fulfilling his mother’s dying wish and proving his mettle to the entire village.
