Federer: Twelve Final Days is a documentary film directed by Asif Kapadia, the acclaimed filmmaker behind “Amy” and “Senna.” This documentary provides an intimate look at the final chapter of Roger Federer’s illustrious tennis career, focusing on the last 12 days leading up to his retirement at the 2022 Laver Cup.
Plot
On September 14, 2022, after a 24-year tennis career, Roger Federer recorded his retirement announcement video, which was released to the public the following day.
Federer then traveled to London for his final tournament, the Laver Cup, where he joined Team Europe, featuring Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal, under the leadership of captain Björn Borg. On September 23, Federer played his last match, a doubles game partnering with his greatest rival, Nadal, against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock. Serving at match point in the deciding tiebreak, Federer made an unforced error, leveling the score. Tiafoe and Sock eventually won the tiebreak, marking the official end of Federer’s career.
Throughout the twelve days leading up to his retirement, the documentary could interweave archival footage of Federer’s most iconic matches with intimate interviews and behind-the-scenes moments. Viewers might witness Federer reflecting on his journey, from his early days as a talented young player to becoming one of the greatest athletes in tennis history.
Production
Director Joe Sabia first met Roger Federer in 2019 when he directed Federer’s “73 Questions” video for Vogue. Three years later, Federer’s team contacted Sabia to film his retirement announcement, which was released on September 15, 2022. In addition to the announcement, Sabia captured the final 12 days of Federer’s career.
