Plot
Felonious Gru, an agent of the Anti-Villain League attends a reunion at his old school, Lycée Pas Bon, where he crosses paths with his rival, Maxime Le Mal. Maxime holds a grudge against Gru for stealing his talent show act during their youth. Maxime reveals that he has enhanced himself with cockroach parts to gain superpowers for his plan to conquer the world, but Gru, with the help of the AVL, has him arrested. Maxime later escapes prison and unveils an invention that transforms people into human-roach hybrids, targeting Gru’s biological infant son, Felonious Gru Jr.
Silas Ramsbottom informs the Gru family of Maxime’s escape and explains that the AVL will relocate them under new identities. Most of the Minions are taken in by the AVL, and five—Dave, Mel, Gus, Tim, and Jerry—are selected for augmentation under the Megaminions initiative, which is later canceled due to the group’s destructive behavior.
In their new affluent neighborhood, the Gru family meets their neighbors, the Prescotts, and their daughter, Poppy. Poppy, an aspiring villain, recognizes Gru from his villainous past and blackmails him into helping her steal Lycée Pas Bon’s mascot, a honey badger named Lenny, so she can enroll there. With the help of three Minions and Gru Jr., they successfully steal Lenny.
The school’s principal, Übelschlecht, identifies Gru through security footage and informs Maxime of Gru’s location using a tracker in Lenny’s collar.
