In August 2015, a film adaptation of the popular video game series was announced, with Lionsgate spearheading the project. The production was set to be managed by Ari and Avi Arad of Arad Productions, and initially, Leigh Whannell was in discussions to take on the role of director. As the project progressed, by February 2020, Eli Roth had become attached to directing the film.

The screenplay was crafted by Craig Mazin, adding a seasoned writer’s touch to the adaptation. The project saw further development when Paul Feig joined as a producer through his production company, Picturestart, promising a blend of creative and production expertise.

Casting for the film took place over an extended period, from May 2020 to March 2021. This process saw the notable inclusion of Cate Blanchett, who brought star power to the ensemble. Following Blanchett’s casting, other significant actors like Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis joined the project over the next year, rounding out a stellar cast poised to bring the video game characters to life.

Principal photography commenced in April 2021 in Budapest, Hungary, during the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these difficulties, the team managed to wrap up the main shooting by June of the same year. However, additional reshoots were necessary and took place over two weeks.

These reshoots were directed by Tim Miller, as Eli Roth was unavailable due to his commitments to another project, “Thanksgiving.” Miller stepped in to ensure that the additional scenes were completed, maintaining the project’s momentum and adhering to its timeline.
