Binny and Family is a simple but heart touching family drama. This movie explores the generational gap (i.e., the difference between two different generations). Which happens in every family at some point or the other. The story of this movie directed by Sanjay Tripathi is relatable and feels very sweet with an emotional touch.
Story
18 year old Binny (Anjini Dhawan) shifts from Bihar to London with her family. Every year her Dada-Dadi (Pankaj Kapoor and Himani Shivpuri) come to London for two months. During this time, Binny has to share her personal space with them. Well, this is where the story begins, where on one side there are traditional Dada-Dadi. Who try to understand the modern world with their old thinking, and on the other side there is Binny. Who demands her freedom and personal space.
The film shows Binny’s family who make a lot of changes for their Dada-Dadi, like converting the bar into a bookshelf and changing the inappropriate signs of the doors with mantras. All this looks funny, but at the same time, it is emotional as both the generations adjust in their own way.
Performances
This is Anjini Dhawan’s debut and she has played the role of Binny with great aplomb. She is a typical teenager who is torn between guilt, rebellion and love for her family. When her grandmother dies in Bihar and Binny feels that because of her she could not get treatment in London, this guilt adds depth to her character.
Pankaj Kapur’s performance is outstanding. He has captured the emotions of an older man in his character very well, who wants to lose his partner and maintain a connection with his grandchild. Himani Shivpuri and Rajesh Kumar have also done a great job in their roles. Especially the scenes where there is a conversation between Binny and her father, emotions flow very naturally in them.
Direction and Writing
Sanjay Tripathi has written a simple but heart touching story. The themes of the story are loneliness and misunderstanding – whether it is during old age or during a teenager’s time. All this is relatable, but the school scenes seem a bit disconnected from the rest of the story. If they were trimmed a bit, the film could have been crisper.
In the second half, the movie goes into the emotional zone when Binny feels guilty for her grandmother. It may seem a little heavy, but the emotions are handled well.
Music and Cinematography
The music by Vishal Mishra and Lalit Pandit is okay, which supports the mood of the movie, but these are not songs that you will remember after the movie. Mohit Puri’s cinematography is simple and realistic, which naturally captures the family dynamics.
Good and Bad
Good
- Emotional Connection: This film connects with every family, especially those around generational differences and family relationships. You may miss your family.
- Strong performances: Pankaj Kapoor, Himani Shivpuri, Rajesh Kumar, Anjani Dhawan have very strong performances. Anjini’s confident debut and Pankaj Kapoor’s performance bringing emotional love are the highlights.
- Feel-good Vibes: This is a light-hearted and feel-good movie. While watching the movie, you will feel an emotional bond with your family and you will smile away after the movie is over.
- Subtle Humor: This movie has plenty of subtle snippets of humor without overwhelming drama, keeping the plot fresh.
- Realistic Family Dynamics: Realistic changes within the family, such as changing the layout of the house for the grandparents are all well portrayed in the film.
Bad
- Slow Start: The film starts off a bit slow, with the story taking time to find its rhythm. The pace seemed a bit slower in the first half.
- Disconnected School Plot: Binny’s school plot and the main plot of the story don’t quite mesh together. This section seems a bit unusual, and if it had been trimmed the runtime could have been more appealing.
- Heavy Emotional Drama: The movie goes a little over-emotional in the second half, especially when Binny feels guilty about his grandmother. Some people find this a bit too heavy.
- Predictable storyline: There is nothing new or new in the story. Many films have been made before about generational differences and family dynamics, so the plot seems a bit predictable.
- Limited Appeal: This is a non-tent pole movie, so its mass appeal is a bit limited. Most people prefer to watch on OTT than in theatres.
