X-Men ’97 picks up the story from where X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997) left off. Both series depict mutants as individuals born with superhuman abilities that usually emerge during puberty. The X-Men, a team of mutant superheroes, were founded by Professor Charles Xavier to safeguard both mutants and humans.

The Animated Series concluded with Xavier nearly dying from an assassination attempt and being taken to space by the alien Shi’ar Empire for healing. X-Men ’97 begins a year later, with the X-Men facing new challenges under the leadership of their former foe, Magneto, in Xavier’s absence.
